10SEP Solid Day

For the very first time here in Kirovograd (say that ten times really fast), we finally felt like it was a normal day.

Our facilitator Yuri went back to Kiev last night so we were finally all alone in our apartment above Sergei, Vova, and the landlady (unrecognizable name). No more having to tiptoe around in the mornings or quietly make breakfast while Yuri rests in the living room on the sofa. We are finally all alone to fend for ourselves in this beautiful, thriving, and friendly part of the country (drip, drip goes the sarcasm).

We had our normal daily breakfast of gruel, bland porridge, and for a special treat - a mealy apple with negative crunch...MMMM, MMMM. Seriously though, we had some good cereal and all its accompaniements like oranges and yogurt. Not that any of you care, but if you're getting excited about what we're eating, you need to see a therapist. I'll get you mine off speed-dial.

The boys were in great spirits this morning and dressed a little better. We are still itching to get our hands on them and find them some clothes that aren't quite as ill-fitting. At least their clothes are VERY fashionable as you can see from the six thousand pictures we posted on the site via Snapfish.

We played inside this morning and began the introductory period to Douberly Discipline Part 1. We discussed basic techniques like how to live off 80% of your income while giving away 10% and saving the other 10%. They nodded their precious little heads in complete understanding which permitted us to move on to quantum physics as applied to sharing toys with friends and siblings - lovely little angels these two.

They actually did seem to grasp the idea of sharing and they also possess a compulsory understanding of the values surrounding the novel concept "please" and its bedfellow "thank you." You know, these two were so fast on the uptake today that it made me wonder if they are already plotting my ultimate demise as soon as we get back to the States. I mean, who's to say they aren't loyal to the now-defunct Soviet cause and just can't wait to strike a blow at the evil Capitalists? Anway, please forgive my lapse into Red paranoia - Alex and Andrew are stunning us daily with their ability to learn quickly and make us happy to the point of tears. They are truly great kids.

This afternoon, we went outside and took a walk-about around the "school" grounds. It is actually a pretty nice facility. There are several areas in utter disrepair, but with all the playgrounds - let's just say the kids will never go without outdoor physcial activity...weather-permitting. We managed to catch up with the Israeli couple and their adopted son Yakhil. The Israeli couple are of Indian descent and possess that natural olive skin-tone. Yakhil is about as Caucasian as they get - complete with fair hair, fair skin, and bright blue eyes. In other words, he is a perfect fit for his new family. Tell you what folks, I don't care if these kids were fluorescent green, they each and every one deserved to be loved.

Anyway, the boys continue to eat bananas and whole grain animal crackers at something approaching the speed of light - probably a harbinger of dark days ahead of us at the grocery store. They are picking up quite a bit of English...let me translate that for you. They are already calling us Mommy and Daddy - heart-melting as you can imagine. The transition will be so much smoother than either of us ever dreamed.

Tomorrow we are going to the Guardian Council which should rubber stamp as Category 3 - Silly Americans Who Want To Double Their Kid Count and Give Our Tourist Economy a 3.7% Boost. After tomorrow's hearing we should have a much better idea of when the "Gotcha Day" will be when we can bring these rats home with us for the first time to sleep under our roof. Oh, the places will we all go and the things we will do. After "Gotcha Day," we are still staring at an approximate week before we can clear visas, passports, and the such to enable us to navigate through customs and immigration upon our return. Seemingly trivial stuff, but very important if I ever want these two to be counted in the census as good God-fearing Independent thinkers skeptical of all things government.

Thanks for soldiering through this mess of a posting. It has been too long since any of us could sit around in our underwear and entertain the masses. Gotta love wireless.

Check you later.....

  1. Oh my gosh, your posts are hilarious. You both certainly have the gift of prose. I have to ask if you continue to smile while you sleep? I think the smiles are permanent and beautiful. I am sure the boys will become math whizzes just like the rest of the Douberly clan. Can they do my taxes next year?! I know Joshua can, he is already smarter than I am. Charm the pants off your landlady and maybe she will invite you to dinner, after she walks her goats!! Thanks for sharing. We love you. The Thoroman's

  2. Another amazing entry.... glad to hear that you are doing as well as you can under the given circumstances. Make sure that after the quantum physics lessons you don't forget to teach them abc's... rumor has it that those come in handy, too. I love you both... keep up the good work you're doing- soon it will be over and you will look back on this fun little trip as just that... a fun little trip (see? I can drip sarcasm, too!)

  3. I loved the pictures! I talked to Jacob on the phone a little bit while Joshua was at soccer practice last night. Lamar, Navy didn't look too bad against the Buckeyes this past weekend. They had some really great plays in the 4th quarter. You can tell from the pictures the boys are all ready establishing a bond with both of you. I can't wait for the holidays! Have you thought up any ideas for Halloween costumes?

  4. Drew and Alex look like they love you both very much. I'm sure the love was already there for them before you(and they) even knew who was in store for your family(and theirs). Your household is going to be CRAZY, but good! Continue to allow God to give you peace, strength and wisdom. Be in His word daily and He will continue to bless you all. Sorry my comments have been short. Love to all. I wonder when you guys can get back to Jacksonville again. I know that's not in your thoughts now but there are a ton of people here that would love to meet Drew and Alex. Be safe Lamar and Kris, Dee Ann

  5. It just KEEPS getting better, just like the rest of the boys' lives. I CAN'T WAIT to hear about them meeting their big brothers. Your older two sons (sounds cool, huh??) are going to be the best big brothers on the planet!!!! I love those two so much, and I will fall more deeply in love with them when I see their interaction with their new brothers. This is the stuff dreams are made of!!!!
Oh, did I mention Garrett will be thrilled since he doesn't give a rip about silly girls and will finally have a, no, TWO playmates his speed when we get together again?? Hey, get out your planners. You guys are going to meet us at Disney in Orlando in January and run the half marathon with me and skip school and do the parks with us for a few days of American orientation!!!!!! Right???
We are about to get in bed and pray for each of you again. Well, I will be in my bed and the kids in theirs and Oscar will lead prayers.....I have been spending quality time hanging my head over the toilet this afternoon as I have a virus...but I will be sure prayers are said!!!
    Much love!!

  6. The boys enjoyed the skype visit with you before school this morning!!! They won't get to read your new message and view the pictures until tomorrow before school. I know they will be anxious to celebrate Gotcha Day with a popsicle or fudgsicle. We are following your adoption tradition of celebrating each highlight with a special treat.Guess they are still too young for champagne, right? Relax, just kidding.Take care and enjoy bonding with your new sons to be!!! God bless you. Love,Mom and Dad

  7. How excited are we all to get both of you and your new sons back to the US of A. I can't wait to meet them. What a great family unit you will all be. I called Josh and Jake on the way home from the gym today but had to leave a voicemail. I know they will be excited to see you.

Both of you have made this journey so memorable for all of us and we thank you for it. You will remain in my prayers for everything to be "rubber stamped" and ready to go. Have you received the separation letters from the other siblings yet? Did you have to go with Natasha to obtain them or is that yet to be done?

I can't wait to get home everyday and check the blog to see what we have. If you look forward to seeing the comments the next morning when you wake up as much as I enjoy reading your comments, it's a good thing.

Prayers are with you. We send our Love, Mom and Dad

  8. Ahhhh yes, the fine Ukrainian cuisine! How many pounds have you lost so far Lamar? I think Sam may have hit 10, I of course despite the slim pickings did not tip the scales in any direction what-so-ever. So unfair!

Ava and I are sitting here together on this fine rainy school day watching a Christmas Baby Einstein....she calls it "Santa Claus"..."I want to watch Santa Claus Mommy?" Never mind it is September. Oh well.

We are of course LOVING all the pictures you are posting. When we saw Andrew in the
overall-shorts we just started laughing, as we have the EXACT same picture of Max, although I believe his too-small-overall shorts were a rosy pinkish-red color. :) Gotta love the fashionable orphans! Speaking of clothes....Max has already started outgrowing 3T, so I will start saving them for Alex. It's funny but you realize how amazingly different your child looks in clothes that actually fit! I remember when Sam went back to get Max, and brought clothes with him in his size....the pictures were amazing. I don't know, maybe we are american snobs....luckily our kids still love us!
We can't wait to see all the boys together no matter what they are wearing! Keep up the positive thoughts....
I know you are otherwise busy but when you get a chance today is Sept. 11th. So in between hugs and kisses remeber to say a prayer for all the families that are not together due to the tragedy of Sept. 11th. I know we had no idea the date, or what was going on in the world when we were in Ukraine. So just a reminder, as I know you are proud to be American's, and would not want to miss such a day in our history. Sam actually had to call me from work to remind me of the date, and pray together.
    With Love and Prayers,
    THe Bryant Bunch

  9. I try to read these posts so studiously, but a huge grin always sneaks it's way onto my face! lol! I am so happy for your whole family, I can't even put it into words.
You have always honored God and He has poured His blessings out on you. This is absolutely His plan for you and it is incredible to see His works in your lives. As I have followed this saga, it is impossible to deny His hand in this amazing story. Only God could have made this happen so perfectly! You are the most deserving family and I can't wait to see what else He has in store for you!
Brother, you are the most incredible dad, husband and man of God, I am humbled to call your friend. I can't wait to see you and your team of boys! Bring them all (and your wife, of course!) to San Diego for vacation any time, we'll have a blast!
    God Bless you all!
-Rex, Amber, Nicole, Bryce and Baby!
