Just in case you missed Josh's comment on the last blog....WE GOT 'EM!!!!! The two new rats are sleeping in the room right next to me and I swear life just keeps getting better for our
family. This road has been long, but today was worth every drop of pain and agony of the last 21 months. Just a little insight here......
First off, many of you know the various delays and false starts we experienced during the process. We nearly had a referral last summer, but the facilitator couldn't make it happen in Kiev. Something about a bad rain storm that scared everybody away - including him obviously. We stuck by this first facilitator for another six months or so until he failed us yet again. We then switched to Yuri Safonov - sort of a God-send if you ask us.
Don't ever mistake what this whole adoption business acutally is - you guessed it...strictly business. Only the most persistent of facilitators get the referrals and only those good facilitators have the contacts to make the adoptions happen without fanfare. Of course, those same facilitators demand the highest fees and get them solely because they produce. We actually believe Yuri to be one of the good ones who can balance the cut-throat world of adoption with making sure the right kids are placed with the right parents. Thanks be to God for bringing him into our lives.
That said, I want you all to know that God had his hand in this right from the beginning. One of the children we just adopted today was all of nine months old and still with his mom when we started down this road. Heck, these two weren't even in the orphanage until June of last year. To top it all off, they weren't eligible for international adoption until a scant one week before we met them. AND, there was a Spanish couple who met them just before we did but couldn't pull off bringing two children home. They fell in love with the boys, couldn't take them both nor could they split them. We also hear rumblings there was a couple just hours behind us who were devastated when they found out the boys were already referred to us. You can see just how small this window was that God opened for us.
I guess that all set the stage for today. We arrived back in court at 10AM seemingly only a few hours after leaving yesterday afternoon. Court went reasonably well - just a little longer than expected. The judge appeared to be grilling us; we later found out he was so fascinated with our international background and overall life experiences. He just wanted to talk to us for a nice long while. Kristina managed to win him and all the ladies in the room with one very key statement. She was asked how she would provide for five men in the home without a daughter to help her with the house work. She smartly but politely replied that she was merely training our boys
on how to be the best future husbands possible. There were no-kidding gasps quickly followed by smiles of adoration from all the Ukranaian ladies. They then quickly turned a very smarmy eye to the judge who sheepishly and IMMEDIATELY changed his line of questioning. The only thing about me that he found quaint was that someone who had been in the military for this long did not have a big belly to only sit behind a desk telling people what to do. I told him to just give me couple of years and that would be the case.
Anyway, court ended and we went home to finish a little more shopping. We then picked up our translator and headed to the orphanage to complete the transfer and "take delivery" of our precious cargo. We packed up some new clothes for the boys and sure enough, the ladies at the orphanage watched us strip our new kids to their birthday suits (sorta apropos). The ladies promptly hauled away their old clothes while we clad them in true Douberly-wear....track suits. They may be comfortable now, but little do our children know of the miles ahead of them on the treadmill, bicycle, and elliptical in those very track suits. We then gave the boys' classmates a whole heap of fruit and fruit juice in lieu of the traditional cake (too sweet for this orphanage apparently) and we left for our apartment.
The night has flown by so much more rapidly than our other evenings here in Ukraine. We cooked dinner, cleaned up, took baths, sacked the quarterback, drank some beer, and looked at the pretty girls walk by. All in a night's work for a Douberly if I may say so myself. They performed all their new tasks with utter distinction and will be certain to attain "man" status in record time. Alexander Yarik does seem to have an aversion to the shower and brushing his teeth - pesky personal hygeine. Andrew Nikolai exceeded all expectations and is well on his way to achieving "kid of the month" in some social circle somewhere.
If you are still reading at this point, God bless your soul. I could ramble on for hours like this, but I will spare you all until tomorrow. The only thing I do want to share is that an irrepressible feeling that has been lifted off my shoulder. Every Ukrainian woman with a scowl seemed to be the lady who would simply swoop in right before court and take the boys from our grasp with a claim to motherhood. Gone are those pressures and now I can get back to the serious business of cutting the fool with my four urchins.
Thanks for staying with us on this magnificent ride so far....more to come later.

Lamar, how great it was to see you on SKYPE a little while ago. Look forward to tomorrow to see Kris and Alex and Andrew. God has been so good in His coordination of everything.
ReplyDeleteI know you look forward to getting the passports, birth certificates and Visas and on a plane heading back to the USA. We will be praying for everything to be speedy on that end as well.
Kiss the boys and tell them "regular" Nana and "regular" Poppa look forward to seeing them tomorrow. Take care, we love you all so very much...Love, Mom
Kiss them and squeeze them for us! We are so happy for you and were thrilled to talk to the oh so excited Joshua and Jacob just a few minutes ago... "We met our new brother on skype! Only one though and he was sleeping... but we saw him and he's real" Beautiful. Couldn't top that. Love you!
ReplyDeleteJL
Uh-Huh, Oh-yeah! I am doin a happy dance! Can you see it! Turn on the sprinkler, and now start the lawnmower, oh wait...here comes the running man!!!
ReplyDeleteI am absolutely thrilled that you are finally at the end of this long road! Now the FUN begins!! God has blessed us by putting you all in our lives! He wanted to make sure there was never a dull moment!
Congratulations again! I hope we will be able to Skype and see the newest Douberlys! I must say it is nice to see the relief on your faces, and in your body. You look relaxed and hopefully after tonight, you got a good night's sleep. Your prayers have been answered! God is Good!!!

Laura and the rest of the Kruegers
Wonderful Wonderful news! Please put the Nowickis on your SKYPE date list to meet the new Douberlys. They have no idea what they are in for, do they(-: You all are truely inspiring. Sleep peacefully tonight- you made it. We cannot express our happiness for all 6 of you. Love the Nowickis
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! We have been crying all day! Your dear friend, Laura Thoroman, put a second coat of paint on Alex (Yarik) and Andrew (Kolya's) bedroom. She also spent many hours making your storage room neat after your mother put everything from the bedroom closet into storage. I think Laura would have been pleased to meet Jamie-Lyn who is oh, so much better than her mother at discarding STUFF. Laura also brought us some beautiful flowers and a chocolate cake for Joshua and Jacob to decorate for GOTCHA DAY.Must admit that we were truly moved at the reaction of your older sons when they met sleeping Koyla(Andrew) and adorable Yarik(Alex). Unfortunately, the UPS fellow called us away from your skype visit by delivering the bunk beds. Everyone knows how I ramble. What I am trying to say is that this has been one of the most exciting days of our lives! Wish you, and all your friends and family could have been at our dinner table and prayer time tonight. Both boys thanked God that the adoption is over and that they have two new little brothers. It just doesn't get much better than this! Must admit that they did kid their 8 yr. old cousin Jade on the phone tonight that she may have one cousin shorter than she is. They are convinced that Jade and Andrew (Kolya) are the same size and he is only 4!!! We think they were teasing Jade, but time will tell!Thank you Lamar and Kristina for bringing two new grandsons into our lives. God bless the new 6 member Douberly Family!!!
ReplyDeleteLove,
Dad, Mom, Joshua, and Jacob

ReplyDeleteSo this is the best day ever!!!!! Well, Joshua and Jacob's birth days are at the same level, but still, whoooooopppppeeeee!!!!!!! I am crying such happy tears for all of you. Boston, I loved to read your joy and excitement. What an awesome day and looking back, an amazing journey....testament to what we always remind ourselves, well, two things...1) It's all in God's hands, in his plan, and 2) Fairy tales DO still come true!!
We are so excited to know we get to love and get to know Alex and Andrew. I sense some Uncle Oscar-led farting contests on vacations in the future!!
Please give those well-dressed Douberly Men-in-training a hug from Aunt CL, Uncle Grouch and our gang. It's too late for me to call our home to tell the girls, but I look forward to that conversation in the morning!! Oscar and I are in Salt Lake City tonight, flying home tomorrow.
We thank God for these beautiful boys who have always belonged with you. They are now on the correct path, and we are so proud of you all!!!!
Much love from across the miles and Godspeed,
Clara-Leigh
Lamar, Kris,
ReplyDeleteCongratulations, this just brings a smile to both Mahalia and I. This great news warms our hearts. We are just so happy for all of you. Words can't describe the deep sense of joy and elation we have for you.
Kris, good luck with all that testosterone and Lamar, I'm really glad you have a full basketball team. God bless and take care.
Short Round and Mahalia
Congratulations! We're so very happy for all of you and between the letter you shared and this post, I am filled with such joy I could burst! You are absolutely right about this journey and the ways God had his hand in it every step of the way. You now have the family God had planned for you all along. What a beautiful thing... We love you and can't wait to talk to you all. Our Hugs and Kisses- Rex, Amber, Nicole, Bryce and Baby Kenyon
ReplyDeleteLOVE the pictures. You are SO blessed to both be able to be there for GOTCHA DAY. I remember looking at the pictures of Sam and MAx....and just being so happy he was officially ours....But now looking at your pictures, I SO wish I could have been there. You will look back on this whole adventure and realize what an amazing time this was, not only getting the boys, but in your relationship. Sam an I feel as if our adoption and trip to Ukraine put our relationship (which was already fantastic) on an entirely new level. All the talking, hoping, praying....it's just amazing. When do you have 4 straight weeks with your husband uninterrupted? And for such an integral part of your lives and family.
ReplyDeleteYou will look back on this experience with each other not just in remembering getting your precious boys, but in the time you spent together as well.
We can see you are already into a Douberly routine...isn't it amazing just to feed your children breakfast?! I wish I could have been a fly on the wall at prayer time last night before bed!
Have a wonderful time with your boys during your remaining Ukraine time. WE can't wait to see you!
Love The Bryant Bunch
Congratulations! What a wonderful day! I am so happy for you all. Those are some lucky little boys. I'm so glad everything is going so well for all of you. Enjoy being together. What an exciting day! Jocelyn "Kircher" Alden and family
ReplyDeleteWell, true to form, tears are falling - imagine that? I guess I'm bringing up the rear in the comments department today - didn't see the blog you wrote till now!
ReplyDeleteI think I said it all in my e-mail, but, Kris, as I read your Mom's comment, I could only imagine hearing the prayers at bedtime last night. Josh and Jake make me cry on a "regular" day - yesterday wasn't just a "regular" day, was it? As Lamar said, it ranked up there with your wedding, Josh/Jake's births! WOW - how elated you must feel!
Lamar - I'm glad you're introducing Andrew and Alex to the Douberly ways (football, etc.) - maybe you could teach them to switch to the Texans from the Jag's, huh? HA!
I got a big kick out of Josh's comment on "baby-proofing" the legos, knowing it was true! HA! It'll be no time that all 4 boys will be in the basement with legos EVERYWHERE - you may have to knock out a wall or two for them! :-)
Thanks again for allowing us to join in your happiness this day!
Love you ALL - can't wait till the next "reporting."
Aunt/Great Aunt Betsy
Congratulations to all six of the Douberlys!! We are so happy for you that you have "officially' welcomed Alex and Andrew into your family. Now starts a new phase of your truly remarkable journey. We look forward to hearing about all the excitement when you get all of your little men together. Good luck with those grocery bills:)
ReplyDeleteMuch love to all of the Douberly clan. Thank you for sharing your story with us.
Tons of hugs,
The Hammers
Kristina and Lamar,
ReplyDeleteYou have been in our seven a.m. morning prayer circle since you landed in the Ukraine. Much happiness to all of you and we will continue to keep you in our prayer circle until you return home and begin your new family life as six.....
Congratulations! We are super happy for you guys! I can't wait to hear all the fun things you guys get to do with the boys now they are with you, and all the transition once you bring them home. Such a wonderful ending to a long journey. Congratulations again and we can't wait to meet the newest members to the Douberly family.
ReplyDeleteLove,
Amanda, Will, and Bailey Brooks

Jamie-Lyn called me to tell me about Joshua's posting. I am so happy for all of you. Off to church! Love, Aunt Teresa
ReplyDeleteThe Gotcha Day pictures are out of this world! What a story they tell, and an impression they leave in one's mind! They definitely illustrate the closing of one chapter, and a beginning of another.
