Day 3 Friday 4SEP09

Friday September 4, 2009

Let the waiting for Monday begin...or so we thought.

We began the day in a lazy mood - why get up early and try to conquer the world when we have to wait three days before we travel to meet a possible new Douberly(s)? Finally, the haze wore off and we took off for a nice jog around Kiev to make sure we wouldn't get lost later in the day when we went sightseeing. The run thoroughly inspired us as we were able to see how to get around the city with relative ease. We ran about 4 miles or so (until my foot started to hurt) before returning home to the apartment.

After our exercise, we showered up (mercifully for the Ukrainians...but still not sure if everyone here reciprocates), and struck out for an early lunch. We went down to the corner to a travel-guide-recommended cafeteria with local fare. The Ukrainian food was good - but we have to let it grow on us some more. One must be careful here not to eat all fried and fatty foods - they are plentiful and cheap! Of course, the one thing we could both agree upon was the Ukrainian borscht. The beet root soup can be done many different ways - always delicious.
The cafeteria came to a whopping $12 (we ordered enough for several locals) , so we definitely needed to walk it off. We struck off on our sightseing tour of some local churches. The churches here are similiar to some of the ornate mosques in Istanbul, albeit with a decided Eastern Orthodox flair. The insides are where the differences can be noticed - the interiors are actually more akin to what one might find in the Vatican. Not quite as showy, but still much more ornate than a mosque. We did get to ascend to the top of St Sofia's highest tower - see for yourself some of the shots we were able to photograph from this perch. Yes, those pictures are real and not something we superimposed or pulled off a website. (Kristina included for your viewing pleasure.)

While in St Sofia, we got a call from Yuri to coordinate a meeting time to pick up our letter of permission to visit a child(ren). We weren't expecting the call to arms this early as we believed nothing else would happen until Monday.

After St Sofia, we went to St Andrei church right next to where we needed to meet Yuri. St Andrei is situated on a hill overlooking a cobblestone street vendor area. It really is one of the touristy highlights of Kiev as one can purchase all matters of souvenirs, knick-knacks and the such. But we were in for oh so much more today.

Apparently Friday is a very popular day to be married in the Orthodox church. The brides and their wedding parties were lined four deep outside of St Andreis waiting for their turn in the chapel for the "big day." We initially were skeptical of our ability to get inside the church due to the ceremonies - not to worry, it appeared none of these weddings were closed to the public anyway. The wedding was something out of the Godfather's baptism scene...complete with a full orthodox choir singing acapella traditional hymns and the minister chanting the rites in a rhythmic almost mystical cadence. We never felt like intruders, but we were blessed to see something so distinctly non-Western.

Outside the church, more brides arrived as some of the completed weddings made their exit - this marriage factory showed no signs of slowing production during the global recession. Some of the wedding parties were dressed interestingly to say the least. I am quite shocked we didn't see a smoking hole where a person used to be as I am sure it was the first time some of these folks had ever seen the inside of any church. That's OK - they probably thought the same about us. Heathens we all are.

We met up with Yuri straightaway at 2:30 and commenced a two hour waiting exercise for our alleged 3:00 appointment to pick up the letter of permission. No, the math is funny purposely there - again we were caught in the Ukrainian time space continuum (vacuum) where time means nothing and personal space is nonexistent. Regardless, we finally received our letter at 4:30 and were able to return home for a small 3 hour nap (yeah, cool) before beginning our Friday evening. It looks like we are still on for a Monday session with our possible charge (s).
We went down to the coffee shop at the corner and had a nice meal (and nicer desserts). We then did a little grocery shopping (bottle of wine inclusive) to cap off our wild and crazy Friday night. A little Skype with our boys capped off a marvelous evening.

On Saturday, it appears we might meet Yuri's girlfriend during some more tourist activites. I will try to keep Kristina on her best behavior and not allow her to give this poor unsuspecting soul the third degree. You all know how gentle she can be when confronted with another possible Alpha female. Things should remain civil unless this girl decides to say something negative about Josh, Jake, and the other addition(s).

Have a great weekend everybody.

  1. Oh! God is so good all the time! All the time He is good! Sounds amazing. Victoria and Julia can't wait to see their new cousin(s). Julia wants to know if you have thought of any names. Victoria is just dazed-not fully awake yet. Go Julia, she just corrected my English. I'm so proud of her. Julia is doing awesome in school-100 in her Intensive Math class. Without meds! LOVE, THE CADENHEAD'S :)

  2. You two are making the best of everything this life has to offer...what a great example!!! We are on pins and needles checking this blog way too often....just can't help myself!!! Hey, just want to be sure this/these kiddo(s) likes horses, no, wait, it has not choice...HA!! I surfed the web until way-late last night and saw some photos from what seems it could be the orphanage you will be visiting...in the right town at least. It looked nice from the photos, anyway. The photos and story were a couple of years old, but the kids were still so precious. Addie and Ainslee prayed for "our friends and their new brother and sister or brother and brother or sister and sister or sister and brother. Whew, think they covered it all!! Many prayers lifting upward to our Creator for those sweet souls you mentioned. God created everything and everyone with supreme purpose even though how they are dealt cards in the world after arrive can be so confusing and unexplainable. Had the last horse show last night and Ainslee got scared after her pony tried to buck her off....the old rodeo cowbos there with their kids scored Ainslee's ride an 80/100. Keep in mind she was there to gingerly trot through a pattern of barrels, not set a record for the highest score ever on a bucking pony!!! WShe chose not to ride the rest of the night. We had no gun with us, or Oscar might have used it.....the pony, not our child!!! Addie has a beautiful, new, fancy, AWESOME Quarter Horse named Lucy. She is black with a tiny bt of white on her forehead and a tiny bit of white on her rear legs just above her hooves. She is the picture of obedience, kindness and patience....oh, and SPEED if she knows you are ready and you ask her!! Out of her 4 events Addie got two thirds and a second and is now going to get an overall third place award for the year-end awards!! We are so proud, and we note how the girls' horses' personalities match the girls' personalitied quite well!! Yes, Ainslee stayed on and is fine, and of course she wants to get another horse but doesn't want to sell the pony.....hhhhmmmmm, got to work on that!!!
Thought I would share some of the life back home here to entertain you, but it appears you can crash enough wedding factories to get that there with no problem...oh, PLEASE bring back some Ukranian clothing for me...HA! Hey, at least the wedding families had extra people a their wedding, unike yours where a certain member of your wedding party DIDN'T stay around for all of it!!
We love you guys, and we need to get on Skype so the girls can chat with your boys...so cool!!
Hope you have a terrific day. We will continue to keep you, your family here, and the children there in our constant prayer.

  3. Wow. You two should publish a book. This is more entertaining than all of the Twilight books combined... I am glad you two actually get to spend some time together alone right now. It probably won't happen again for quite a while, so continue enjoying each others company. We will, of course, continue to keep your ENTIRE family at the very front of our thoughts and prayers. Love you!

  4. HI Kris and Lamar - I'm being Ginny's "eyes and ears" this w/end while they are camping. I called her yesterday, but apparently the cell service is less than desirable. She called me while in the nail salon and I was unable to speak w/her - she suggested I try texting her or leaving another voice mail on the cell with any news! Anyway, will call right now and convey the "wedding crashing" that went on yesterday - she'll get a BIG kick out of that one, but am sure she'll not be surprised! HA! You think they'll film a Ukranian Wedding Crashers movie? :-) Well, as we ALL know, I can be verbose, so will close this. Please know that I am praying for you daily and know that God is directing your paths - wherever they "apparently" lead (like in the Church). :-) Seems Lamar is concerned over your possible ill-conduct Kris - please TRY to behave! Love you both lots! Aunt Betsy

I ask my friends "Have you checked the blog lately?" I ask my husband "Anything new on THE blog?" It is like yours is the only blog in the whole world!

Glad you guys are making the best of your waiting time. I am looking forward to see all of your pictures! If you would like to SKYPE me, I am here!

  6. Sorry our comment is late coming. Your boys are sound asleep. They had a busy day swimming, boating, and even riding on a jet ski with the Hensley Family!
Sounds like you two are making the best of your trip. It must be difficult being patient with the Ukranian ways, but you did have practice in Japan. We are praying for you. The boys did ask me to send you their love.God bless you. Love, Mom, Dad, Joshua, and Jacob
